Introduction

  • Cloud Storage Basics

The true value of data lies in storing/sharing the same so it can be put to use. The time is long gone when data used to be stored on physical storage devices such as Compact discs or hard drives. Accessing such devices from different locations or by different Users was a major issue along with the risk of damage or worse, loss of data.

For the said reason and many more, cloud storage offers the features to upload, store and retrieve the data at your ease and with security. You may have at some or another point used cloud storage. Whether for keeping best photographs or videos with your loved ones, or important documents, or may have seen businesses using cloud servers to store huge data at not much cost. Later, accessing such data may have made you realize, how cloud storage works is more convenient and a secured option as compared to any other physical storage devices.

  1. What is Cloud Storage?
  2. Concerns about Cloud Storage
  3. How does Cloud Storage work?

1. What is Cloud Storage?

Cloud storage is simply storing and managing data on warehouses called data centres managed by third parties. These data centres are connected with the master control server through ethernet. There can be multiple data centres connected with the ethernet, thereby enabling the access of such data centres from different locations/systems remotely and retrieving stored data as and when required. The server may have multiple database servers connected with the master control server or it may as well just have one database for small-scale usage.

2. Concerns about Cloud Storage

Primary concerns about storing and sharing data on a cloud server are the breach of privacy and loss of data. Even though there cannot be 100% safety, yet it is safe to claim that the cloud service providers’ topmost concern is the safety of data. Multiple security layers with data encryptions make it a safer option than keeping huge data on physical storage devices.

3. How does Cloud Storage work?

The process starts when the user sends data/files to the database server through the internet. The said data can be anything like photos, music, emails, documents, etc. Such data is then stored on the server and multiple copies are created and shared within the database and also to other database servers connected via a master control server. Accordingly, the data is made available to hundreds or thousands of database servers.

The stored data is end-to-end encrypted and protected using authentication processes like username and password. Thus, the uploaded data cannot be accessed by unauthorized systems without the protection keys generated by the user. The multiple copies stored on database servers can be retrieved remotely via the web-based interface as and when required. The user can make changes to the data and upload it again, or the server may also allow modifying data on the server itself. The more the number of database servers, the wider would be the bandwidth, providing speedy access to the database.

The data centres are responsible to keep the servers, and thereby the stored data, from physical harm, theft, or any other threat leading to loss of data. The extensive infrastructure including backup generators is installed to keep servers from heating and to manage power failures so as to provide easy and timely retrieval of data with utmost security.

Conclusion

To summarize, it is right to claim that cloud storage is not just the Present, but is also the Future of businesses. The said cloud storage simply aims at eliminating the need to carry data storage devices and also the need to install separate data storage infrastructure which can be really expensive. The associated concerns of the Cloud users are also being addressed and dealt with in a real-time manner.
