Let us now understand what is cloud bursting. Cloud bursting is the term that is used to describe the utilization of the resources of the cloud temporarily through a hybrid cloud environment. There are many kinds of high performance and applications of a non-critical nature that can benefit when it uses the strategy of cloud bursting. When the requirements of the resources exceed what can be got from the collocated data center or the on-premise data then the application shifts the data temporarily into public cloud space. This helps to free up space in the primary data center.
Cloud bursting is a configuration that gets set up between the public and the private cloud. It deals with the peak in the IT demands and offers an economical saving. This means that the user will have to pay for a resource only if he has a demand for this resource. If any company that makes use of the private cloud consumes 100 percent of the resources available then the traffic that is overflowed gets directed towards the public cloud that avoids any kind of service interruption.
Here we define cloudburst architecture. Cloud bursting architecture forms a dynamic scaling that scales or helps to burst the IT resources that are available on-premise into a cloud. This is needed when the predefined threshold capacity is achieved. The corresponding IT resources of the cloud are pre-deployed but are redundant and stay inactive unless there is a cloud bursting. After these are not required anymore the cloud-based IT resources get released and the architecture then bursts back in on the environment on-premise that had already existed.
Cloud bursting is a scalable and flexible architecture that offers the cloud consumers an option to use the IT resources that are cloud-based to meet the high demands of usage. The architectural model is based on the foundation of the resource application mechanisms and the automated scaling listener.
The automated scaling listener will determine when the request needs to be redirected towards the IT resources of the cloud. Along with the resource replication and the automated scaling listener, many other mechanisms are used to automate the cloud bursts. This is purely dependent on the IT resource type that is getting scaled.
There are many ways of cloud bursting strategies and many of the large technology industries are into it. Here are a few of them:
An intercloud is a term that is used to describe the cloud of many clouds. A single cloud is a collection of many virtualized servers that creates a resource pool. The intercloud is a collection of clouds that get pooled into a seamless and enormous center of data. It allows an environment of a hybrid cloud that makes use of many clouds as is needed. One can also choose when and which of the providers would they require.
Earlier the application developers had to overprovision their storage capacity and their server resources to meet the surge in demand in their testing environment. They however were not aware of the computing power and the storage space that they would need. This led to the purchase of much more hardware than was needed. With the expanse of the cloud, it lets the users just pay for the resources that they use as well as only when they use them.
The public cloud game gets an interesting twist where instead of relying on the public WAN to access the data in the cloud one is provided with a direct VPN connection to the data within the shared environment. The IT directors thus get to enjoy the best of both the worlds in the environment of public cloud
You now know what is cloud bursting. Businesses will generally host an application in their private cloud to adhere to the standards of security and to maintain the levels of performance. However, their existing environment may not always be capable of meeting the sudden workload increase which could be because of seasonal demand, a change in the business environment, or any kind of inorganic growth in the company. This is where cloud bursting comes into use. The use of cloud-based platforms is sure to improve in the future across a range of applications.
