It is now fairly common knowledge that learning analytics is a popular and extremely profitable way for young professionals to make a career switch. However, enhancing one’s analytics skill set is equally beneficial for anyone already working in the data space, as it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. One of Jigsaw Academy’s alumni, Aadhaar Aggarwal, is taking this exact route, and to great effect.
“I was working with descriptive analytics and Business Intelligence. So, I already had a background in data to a large extent,” he told us.
“But I wanted to enhance my repertoire and broaden my skill set, and doing an analytics course seemed like the ideal way to achieve that.”
Choosing the right program was obviously extremely important, and that’s where Jigsaw’s course structure really stood out to Aadhaar.
“I did a lot of research before deciding on one. Of all the various programs that I found, the ones at Jigsaw were the only one that was completely dedicated to analytics. A lot of the others went into generic IT concepts, which didn’t make sense for me.”
After enrolling in the first batch of the Postgraduate Program for Data Science and Machine Learning (PGPDM), Aadhaar did have a few initial doubts and wondered if a shorter course might have been a better idea. But in the end, he realized that PGPDM was ideal for his aims and the expertise he wanted to build up.
“It’s definitely a big investment of time and money,” he said. “But it provided a comprehensive end-to-end learning experience, which is exactly what I was looking for. Data Science is a massive field, requiring a large amount of self-study and as a result, this program was ideal to give me a more definite path to follow.@
“The module on statistics was a highlight but I would say that the Capstone Project was the best thing about the whole course, as it helped us put all the pieces together, of the different concepts we had been taught.”
While he hasn’t yet changed his field of work, Aadhaar knows that he has the chance to do so at any time, given that he is now armed with far more in-depth analytics knowledge and expertise. “I’m still working with descriptive analytics but the program has helped provide me with a great new perspective on how to approach certain problems. And thanks to the new skills I’ve acquired, I’ve been able to explore new avenues and look for new potential areas of work. I do have a few options in the pipeline but I’m taking enough time to figure out how to take them forward.”
As Aadhaar’s story highlights, you don’t necessarily have to force yourself down a different path after completing an analytics course. What these programs do is open up your mind to new possibilities in the professional space, while also helping you deal with your existing work more efficiently.
